Being a Park Ranger
The job of a park ranger is a job of inspiration
Your job can take you anywhere in this entire nation
In all the peaks and valleys you’ll always have a view
Looking to the east or west there’s always something new.
Perhaps a moose will catch your eye, or maybe a wildflower
The sun may gleam upon the rocks,
Or maybe there’s a shower,
The mountain trails or canyon floor may
need your full attention
animals who freely roam
may require your protection.
The job of a park ranger is a job of inspiration
Your job can take you anywhere in this entire nation
In all the peaks and valleys you’ll always have a view
Looking to the east or west there’s always something new.

Flight
N. Lewis
The power of flight was a dream for so long
So little was right, so much we got wrong
So many believed that it couldn’t be done
But we made it happen,
we soared toward the sun
First balloons floated up by heated air
with a basket beneath you could travel somewhere
gazing below you’d see land passing by
a miraculous view we had from the sky!
Then came the gliders, with strange bird-like wings
so many contraptions, so many strange things
men jumped into air trying to flap, trying to glide
a few seconds airborne, what a thrill, what a ride!
The power of flight was a dream for so long
So little was right, so much we got wrong
So many believed that it couldn’t be done
But we made it happen,
we soared toward the sun
Finally, believe it, we got it all right
With propellers and engines we finally took flight
Brave men and brave women took to the air
The sky was the limit when we were up there!

Best Friends by Nancy Lewis
What is a friend you call the best
what makes them different from the rest
can you have more than one
is friendship based on having fun
Are they there thru thin and thick
how do you make a friendship stick
Best friends Best friends
What do they help you do
It seems that you can lean on them and they can lead on you
Sometimes you try to trade it
for a favor or when you’re sorry
I promise I’ll be your friend if you invite me to your party
Best friends Best friends
What do they help you do
It seems that you can lean on them and they can lead on you

I'm A Bug

I’m A Bug
If you’re a bug or an insect,
A spider or an ant,
Your life is always on the run
You never stand a chance.
The people think you are a pest
and cringe when you’re around
Bugs make them stand on chairs or flee
Just by walking on the ground.
I’ve seen that look of anger
when the humans hunt their prey.
That look of satisfaction when they
Go and get the spray
No wonder that we’re careful
And venture out with fear
The humans only have one wish
To make us disappear!
I’m a bug, I’m a bug
Not an animal you hug
But I really wouldn’t mind,
If you’d take a little time
And if you’re going to do us in,
just be a little kind.
Now we know mosquitos bite,
And stink bugs have a stink
The spiders hang around on walls
And a cockroach makes you think
That getting rid of all of us is what you need to do
Just please don’t hate us so,
Cause we don’t hate all of you.

When You Love What You Do
The boys worked hard
They wanted no glory
They only wanted to write
The flight story.
They learned from failures
And all that went wrong
You can’t get there from here
unless you are strong.
Many people we never will know
Made many things happen
Made many things so
A couple of people might take the lead
But all those around you
will make it succeed!
I got plenty of credit
And never looked back
If you love what you do
You don’t worry bout that
If you go for a challenge
That really is tough
Then your work on the way
Will be enough
Many people who we never will know
Made many things happen
Made many things so
A couple of people might take the lead
But all those around you
will make it succeed!

First There Was One

First There was One
First there was one
First there was one
First there was one, trying to fly a plane
No man would teach her, what a shame, what a shame
Then there were two, who reached for the sky
Back when they were young their parents said, “try.”
Two didn’t give up and then there were three
All of the women made flight history
Four stepped up and five qualified,
All great pilots, no surprise, no surprise
Here’s what we know, how it all began
First Harriet Quimby, then Bessie Coleman
Amelia Earhart is a name better known
But without one and two, would she ever have flown?
Sally Ride came later and Mae Jemison
We would still be at zero, if we didn’t have one.
First there was one
First there was one
It was Bessie’s dream to teach girls how to fly
The others had dreams, they wanted to try,
For years we’ve been (they were) told just to wait,
“Stay there little girl, there’s a lock on that gate.”
But times have changed women know what they’ve got
they’ve always had the keys to the lock
They will be included because it’s fair
And the first keep coming, we’re right there, we’re right there
First there was one
First there was one
First there was one

The Great American Pastime – Nancy Lewis
Oh the Great American Pastime is a game that we all love
We played it hard, we played it well with a bat and ball and glove
Those days were filled with good and bad as we stayed between the lines They said our color wasn’t right in the good old great pastime
The Monarchs and the Homestead Braves were teams that we all knew The Cleveland Buckeyes and the Memphis Red Socks just to name a few
Satchel Page, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson knew the truth
They could have joined the major leagues and played with Cobb and Ruth
The Great American Pastime is a game that we all love
We played it hard, we played it well with a bat and ball and glove
The Great American Pastime The Great American Pastime
It was Satchel’s fastball and Papa’s speed and Gibson’s awesome bat That told a story of baseball and so much more than that
The Negro Leagues were a world apart, it gave us something fine The chance to play in the game we love
It’s America’s Great Pastime
it’s a game that we all love
We played it hard, we played it well with a bat and ball and glove
The Great American Pastime The Great American Pastime

ELECTRIC DREAMS
It may seem so faraway
But the things we do today,
will change things for tomorrow
the choices that we make right now,
will bring us joy or sorrow.
Solar power, wind, and water
Could give us what we need
But we’re the ones who will decide
Where the present leads.
Destroying mountaintops for coal,
Polluting natural streams,
Is this the price that must be paid
For our electric dreams?
Whether you’re in Appalachia,
New York or Tennessee,
We’re bound by more than power lines
And commercials on tv
It’s a crisis that we face right now,
You need to understand
The lives of children everywhere
you hold in your hands.

Other Way ‘Round
N. Lewis
G D
When I was young man, I had a special dream
Em C
It wasn’t too amazing, not a money making scheme
G D
I always cared about, the creatures of the sea,
Am C
It always was my dream to study, marine biology.
D Am
But life had other plans and I had to make some money
F C F C D
No more schooling for this kid, sometimes life is kind of funny,
Em C
I started in a pet store, then worked inside a zoo,
D
The animals were miserable, there was nothing I could do.

Way ‘Round
Hamsters running on a wheel, goldfish in a bowl
Who wants to live inside a cage
Confinement takes its toll
They say a natural habitat makes everything okay
But animals who don’t live free, suffer everyday.
I want to help these animals and show them that I care,
People need to understand and try to be aware,
Whichever animal is trapped inside a cage or pen,
It needs to be the other way ‘round,
we should be here for them!

Same Thing For Me

The Same Thing For Me
Did you hear about Oney,
and her wish to be free,
She ran away, she walked out
with such bravery!
It was a scary and dangerous
thing to do,
But she found she could be brave,
She’d rather get caught and
give up her life, then spend
her life as a slave.
Did you hear about Oney,
and her wish to be free,
She ran away, she walked out
with such bravery!
I wanted my freedom, there is nothing
better,
Our founding fathers sent King George
a letter,
They told him they wanted their own
liberty,
How come they don’t want the same
thing for me?
Did you hear about Oney,
and her wish to be free,
She ran away, she walked out
with such bravery!
She ran away, she walked out
with such bravery!

HAWAII SONG
Welcome to Hawaii, where breezes gently blow,
Where luaus, leis, and palm trees tell you
What you want to know,
But part the palm fronds gently and glimpse
A tale that’s true
How the people of Hawaii lost all they ever knew.
Hawaii, Hawaii, the land of Wakiki,
It’s poi and Honolulu, and what a place to be!
Hawaii, Hawaii, the mainland wanted you
And now you’re one of us,
Do you like it? Sure you do!
You can ride upon the waves and play upon the sand
You can love the lovely beaches,
hold seashells in your hand,
But a hundred years ago,
a Queen sat upon her throne,
Then someone came and took it
And left her all alone.
